Job DescriptionJob SummaryThe Zendesk Email Platform team is looking for an Engineering Team Lead with experience building and maintaining large-scale SAAS systems. We send and receive millions of emails a day and our customers rely on us to keep email processing and notification sending fast and free of errors. You are a phenomenal fit if you have deep technical experience, experience working on large-scale systems, and software engineering leadership skills.What you’ll be doingRecruit, onboard and develop talented software engineers for the San Francisco team.Be a hands-on Developer - you’ll contribute to the core Zendesk Support codebase on a near-daily basis.Work full-stack across our system - we own and operate our code and use infrastructure technologies such as Kubernetes, Kafka, DataDog, Spinnaker, etc.Collaborate closely with sibling email engineering teams across multiple offices to ensure projects are effectively and efficiently split between locations.Influence good architectural decisions, balanced by the reality of our business strategy.Participate in all phases of the software lifecycle including being a principal collaborator with Product Managers to define product specifications.Review code submissions of junior staff - mentoring and guiding them throughout the process.Successfully move an application through QA and production stages in our continuous integration environment through to deployment.Proactively seek out and help to minimise pain points within the infrastructure and code bases of Zendesk.Work in a dynamic agile team where best practices for delivering excellence and high availability software is paramount.What you bring to the roleRequired:Proven experience in a progressive software development environment, preferably in SaaS.A sound understanding of web application development and agile practices.Strong software engineering skills with experience in a dynamic language, preferably Ruby.Previous responsibility for the management and development of Software Engineering teams.Great communication skills, both written and verbal - you’ll be collaborating closely with multiple offices around the world.A quality, balanced approach to development and testing, including TDD where appropriate.A love of problem-solving. Investigating problems and figuring out the appropriate fix is something you're good at.Preferred: Familiarity with the email standards. Even better if you know SPF, DKIM & DMARC. We can help you get up to speed if not.DevOps experience - when problems occur we work with the operations team to help figure out what’s going on and how to fix it. Being comfortable getting onto production servers and delving into the logs becomes important.Experience working in an agile development environment.You love helping everyone improve their code, working together with the team on Github and the PR process.Tech StackWe write code mostly in Ruby, Golang, JavascriptWe run our services with a mix of Kuberntes and EC2 all running in AWS.Our services use Elasticache/Redis, MySql (Aurora), SQS, Lambda, Kafka, and other AWS services.At Zendesk, we believe that every great customer relationship stems from a conversation.
